When I first arrived in Barcelona I began Spanish classes at International House – one of the city’s best language schools. After a few months of this, I began to feel frustrated as I wasn’t making the kind of progress I had hoped. That was before I found Paula! After almost a year working together, my listening, spoken and written Spanish has significantly improved. Today, I am able to communicate much more confidently with the local people. I think what worked best for me was that Paula tailor-made each class to meet my needs. That, and her personality and relaxed style immediately put me at ease. She has a gentle way of correcting errors while encouraging me to speak and take risks with the language. This is just what I needed in my language teacher!
When Paula left Barcelona for Lanzarote, I tried other teachers but was unable to find anyone remotely her equal. I’m so happy that she has taken me on as a “Skype student” so we can continue our twice weekly lessons.

Paula taught me in 2011 when I was teaching in Spain and I enjoyed her lessons so much that I went back for a short holiday to brush up my Spanish with her in 2014. Paula is an amazing teacher! Thanks to her I have advanced really quickly and after few months I was able to work in the spanish setting, discussing and presenting in Spanish in the reunions and writing emails and projects in high -level Spanish! The thing I like a lot about Paula´s approach to teaching is that she tailors every single class to the needs of student. She is very attentive and quickly finds out week points which she then tries to reinforce by designing different and interesting exercises. Her vocabulary of English and Spanish is huge and she quickly finds the way to explain unknown words and proverbs or the “urban Spanish language”.

Paula was very happy to go along with my suggestion of one hour walking sessions through the different neighborhoods of Barcelona. As an advanced, but not fluent, speaker this gave me good real world experiences as I walked and talked with Paula. In addition I got to know many off the beaten path neighborhoods this way. I can’t thank Paula enough for helping build my confidence in learning Spanish! Before discovering her I tried: different group classes, Rosetta Stone, Duolingo etc and while none of these things were a waste of time, I certainly never felt confident enough to talk to anyone in Spanish! Now my weekly Skype sessions with Paula mean I can practice talking in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere about things that interest me (real life!) while she scaffolds my learning by typing up corrections, phrases and vocabulary for me to remember later. The mini-revision sessions at the end of the lesson really help me to ‘fix’ the learning in my head. I am not a confident learner of languages so I have found this approach is perfect for me; I now find myself able to initiate conversations with Spanish colleagues- something I would have struggled to do before!
